WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS LOOKING FOR IN A DREAM HOME? IS THIS TRUE TO YOUR MUST HAVE LIST?

August 15, 2014

What are the different generations looking for in a dream home?

Is this true to your must have list?

Generation Y (born 1978 – 1995), Generation X (born 1965-1977) & Babyboomers (born 1946 – 1964) have very different views on what is important to them when purchasing a home. The market research firm, GfK Roper, recently surveyed 1000 US homeowners asking what features would be most important to them in their dream home. Below is the breakdown based on generation and rank. See if these dream home amenities fit your wants and needs in the generation you are associated with.

The results are very interesting. The study showed Gen-Y in particular centered their amenities on entertaining with the swimming pool and game room while both Gen-X and the Boomers preferred more functional features such as state of the art kitchens and large closets. The Gen-Y group didn’t even list gardens or workshops but are both top 10 for the other 2 groups. More interesting is Gen-X didn’t list high-tech entertainment but the boomer generation has it listed in their top ten. Gen-Yers are more interested in lifestyle and living space serving more of a social hub than a private haven for rest and sustenance.
